While Europe was undergoing the late Middle Ages during which it produced Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, among others, Persia was experiencing her own transformation with the decline of Ilkhanian and its replacement by Mozzafarian dynasty. And if Dante is called il Sommo Poeta (the Supreme Poet) and Petrarch, the Father of Humanism, and Boccaccio is considered another early humanist, Hafiz of Shiraz attained Cosmic Consciousness and his work later left a mark on Goethe, Thoreau, Emerson and Frederick Engels. Between 1265 and 1375 when the three Europeans were spreading their wisdom, Persia also produced Rumi (1207-1273), Saadi (1210-1292), and Hafiz (1325–1389). It took, however, about three hundred years for Hafiz’s poetry to reach Europe which was undergoing its Renaissance and Shakespearean transformation.For the modern reader of Hafiz, I have compiled this book which includes more than 150 years of writing about Hafiz.
